Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue will not leave viewers hanging. Despite ABC pulling the plug on the freshman dramas last week, the brains behind both shows tell TVLine that they were given enough time to turn their respective swan songs into series finales. “We have time to tweak,” confirms Last Resort creator Shawn Ryan, adding that Episode 13 will indeed function as a full-fledged series finale.

For 666 exec producers David Wilcox and Matt Miller, meanwhile, tease that their Sunday spookfest “is building to a powerful and surprising series finale, where all your questions will be answered. We hope fans of the show continue watching all the way to the end of Jane and Henry’s incredible journey to the dark side.” Is it really the end for 666 though? DVR data released last week showed the ratings for the thriller’s Nov. 4 episode spiking a staggering 77 percent — raising hopes that ABC might un-ring the cancellation bell. The news prompted leading man Dave Annable to vent on Twitter that ABC “f—ed up” by axing the series. But it’s a decision the network appears to be standing by.

While ABC president Paul Lee calls the DVR surge “amazing,” it’s not enough to offset the show’s miniscule live numbers. “It’s wonderful to see the passion [these] shows have,” he says. “We just have to make sure we monetize it.”

It’s a sad day for fans of two ambitious ABC dramas that came up short in the ratings this fall: Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue will soon end their runs.

ABC will finish airing the original 13-episode orders for both shows, but neither will receive a full-season pickup.

For 666, the writing has been on the wall for weeks. The Sunday-night supernatural drama starring Terry O’Quinn has been shedding its Revenge lead-in and been on a downward spiral since its debut.

For Last Resort, the news is somewhat surprising. Though its ratings matched the performance of 666, Shawn Ryan’s submarine thriller was one of the best-reviewed new fall shows and, until very recently, insiders were betting it would get a “back nine” order. But Last Resort struggled against very steep competition in its 8 p.m. slot and the show’s ratings ticked down a little further last night.

Oftentimes freshman series cancellations are met with a fair amount of online jeering (there wasn’t much disappointment over CBS’ Made In Jersey or NBC’s Animal Practice getting the axe). But these two are a bummer. Understandable, given the numbers, but a bummer. Both creatively tried to bring something new to broadcast primetime rather than rely on familiar drama formulas. Even if you’re not a fan of these shows, you can respect the effort behind them.

As with last year’s Pan Am, ABC is retaining its option to revive either show for next season. So if midseason shows like Red Widow and Zero Hour perform worse than these two and the network’s pilot season goes poorly, there’s a chance one or both could be resuscitated. It happened to CBS’ Unforgettable, which was cancelled last season and then later announced to return next summer. But the example of Pan Am is far more typical. (The Red Widow pilot is quite good but, then again, I also loved the pilot for Last Resort).

The news comes on the heels of CBS cancelling its freshman sitcom Partners (which veers more toward the “online-jeering” category). Two other ABC freshman shows have survived the winter cut: Country drama Nashville and wacky aliens sitcom The Neighbors previously received full-season orders.

Nashville = 9.4 million viewers and a 3.2 in 18-49

Rob Sitch and Rachael Taylor called in to chat with Meshel, Tim and Marty tonight to talk about their new movie Any Questions for Ben?. The movie follows Ben, a 27-year-old with everything you could imagine – a great job, friends, and girls, as he takes a soul-searching journey to discover the meaning of life.

“We came to the conclusion that people are becoming adults later in life, but their mid-life crises are becoming earlier,” Rob explained to Meshel, Tim and Marty.

“Everyone does everything now. We had to think of an exotic place that young people wouldn’t have been and we struggled. We ended up having to shoot in Yemen, believe it or not. Because, really, anyone by about 25, if you haven’t hiked to the basecamp of Everest, you’re nobody.”

Any Questions for Ben? is in cinemas Thursday 9 February.

Sorry, Charlie, but this week’s tiny uptick in ratings simply wasn’t enough to keep your Angels aloft.

ABC has shut down production on its reboot of Charlie’s Angels effective immediately, in the wake of a full month of meager ratings. The detective drama become this fall’s fifth casualty after NBC’s The Playboy Club and Free Agents, CBS” How to Be a Gentleman (which ceased production after being shuttled to Saturdays), and The CW’s H8R.

Already-produced Angels episodes will continue to air in the Thursdays-at-8 slot, at least up to and perhaps beyond scheduled end-of-month holiday preemptions (such as when another Charlie, Brown, fills the slot).

In its Sept. 23 debut, Angels attracted 8.7 million viewers while scoring a 2.1 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demo. At last tally, the show drew 5.9 mil and a 1.3, down 32 and 38 percent, respectively.

Hello Angels: ABC has officially ordered a new version of Charlie’s Angels to series.

Angels, which stars Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor, will land a spot on the network’s schedule next season (likely in the fall, and probably a choice time slot).

Summit previously scheduled the 3D The Darkest Hour for August 5, a fairly typical summer release date for a sci-fi thriller. Per Box Office Mojo, the studio has pushed the film to December 23, a less natural holiday season bow. On the new date, The Darkest Hour must vie for 3D theaters against The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn; the date also holds The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and We Bought a Zoo.

Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Rachel Taylor, Max Minghella, and Joel Kinnaman star as young tourists who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door) is directing from a script by Jon Spaihts. Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) is among the producers.

The young Puerto Rican actor (The Wire, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) has landed the coveted role of Bosley, assistant to the detective agency’s mysterious owner Charlie Townsend who often helps the trio of Angels.

MATTHEW Newton was keeping a low profile at a Sydney rehab centre yesterday after “unravelling” with the news his ex, Rachael Taylor, was loved up with co-star Josh Lawson.

But Lawson’s good mate, Nova funnyman Ed Kavalee, was spilling the beans on his friend’s new relationship.

Kavalee confirmed the pair were head over heels in love.

“There’s no inkling that she’s thinking her ex (Newton) is a good guy and wants to get back together,” Kavalee said.

“When he (Lawson) said (last year) there might be something going on, I asked ‘is she all right?’ He said she’s very strong. She’s moving on with her life.”

Indeed, the pair’s careers have gone from strength to strength since meeting.

Kavalee let slip that Taylor was confirmed a lead role in the TV remake of Charlie’s Angels. She also stars in hit US series Grey’s Anatomy. And Lawson, star of the coming Underbelly, has revealed his surprise at winning a role in American pilot House of Lies.

“It is a comedy pilot for Showtime with Don Cheadle. I am really excited about it,” he said. “This one was sort of out of the blue.”

Newton was arrested on Wednesday for breaching his AVO after allegedly bombarding Taylor with texts and calls.
